What should have been a Cinderella story has a tragic ending. Rookie Angels pitcher Nick Adenhart was killed in a car accident just hours after making his first appearance at the pitchers mound, his father watching from the stands. Adenhart's car was struck by Andrew Thomas Gallo, 22, of Riverside. Preliminary results indicated Gallo's blood-alcohol level was "substantially over the legal limit" of .08 percent, police Lt. Kevin Hamilton said. Adenhart died in surgery following the accident. Henry Pearson of Manhattan Beach, a 25-year-old passenger in the car, and the driver, 20-year-old Courtney Stewart of Diamond Bar, were pronounced dead at the scene, police said. Gallo was booked into jail on three counts of murder, three counts of vehicular manslaughter, felony hit-and-run and driving under the influence of alcohol. No bail was set.

Safe South Dakota is a website with stats, stories and facts about drunk driving in South Dakota. They also have commercials from heart-broken parents who have lost their children to drunk driving accidents. My parents have always warned me about never drinking and driving and never getting in the car with someone who has been drinking. Although I knew they would never be happy if I called them early in the morning for a ride I knew they would have been even more upset if someone ELSE had to call them to tell that I had been in an accident because of drunk driving. I would hate to lose a friend or loved one to something as preventable as death via drunk driving.
